Just can't stay away | Thanks for you thoughts on this issue, the hoses your mentioning specifically where are they? Internal to the master or else where? Posted on: 2019/5/5 14:13 | |||

Quite a regular | Hi, and thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out. I vaguely know that Fastenal does shipping, although I didn't think of it. I'm also not sure if they do it in Canada, but that's easy enough to find out. I have a branch near me and Winnipeg is a big enough city I'm sure the seller will too. Posted on: 2019/5/5 13:31 | |||

HH56 | Re: Clutch Issue | #58723 | ||

Forum Ambassador | Could be the new friction material was not as cushioning as the old. Perhaps wearing in will help although Packard did use different clutch discs with different characteristics for various applications and models. In addition, you might look thru the service index for 37-42 models. There are a few articles on clutch chatter and maybe one or more will suggest something that needs checking. The snubber being in good condition and adjusted properly is one item that has affected others. First version snubber wasn't very strong and apparently the original version of the second or improved type replacement snubber which your car would have had is not too robust either. Some have mentioned the rubber in the ball joint can deteriorate without outward signs. Rods were a bit weak too and can bend or break. Flackmaster repro'd a much more robust version at one time so if yours is the original and shows signs of failing you might see if he still has the better version. Posted on: 2019/5/5 12:58 | |||

Home away from home | Good advice on rebuilding and it's really not difficult to even do it yourself. I've done so many times and all are still on the road and working well. First, though, check to be sure that the hoses haven't collapsed internally as that would also give the symptoms you described. Posted on: 2019/5/5 12:34 | |||

Home away from home | If you have Fastenal in your area and the shipping area, they have a 3rd party logistics branch that ships stuff like this. I had a 1933 Pierce Arrow rear axle shipped from California to Atlanta for $150. You have to drop it off at a Fastenal store and the shipping end and pick it up at one on the receiving end. They are more worried about size than weight. Posted on: 2019/5/5 12:08 | |||

Packard Newbie | Clutch Issue | #58726 | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Home away from home | In reassembling my '39 Six with the new engine, I had the 3-spd tranny rebuilt and the machine shop that did the motor, resurfaced the flywheel. I went over the clutch and pressure plate. They looked fine to me and had been working smoothly prior to disassembly. The throw-out and pilot bearing seemed within spec, so all I did was take the old clutch disc to a brake & clutch house and had them re-sinter new discs onto it and put it all together. Now I am finding a distinct chatter when engaging the clutch from a stopped position. It doesn't see to matter if I rev the car up a little bit and try and feather the engagement or use minimal feathering and let the engine torque 'grab' the drive, I am getting a chatter. Can anyone suggest anything here as a probable cause. I have driven for 50 years and many of my vehicles have been standards, so I am intimately familiar with clutch operation. I am wondering if the new disc and the fresh surface on the flywheel just need to wear in, or if this symptom portends a more serious issue. Any info or input much appreciated. Forum Ambassador | Personally, if I were going to have a unit rebuilt the first choice would be to check with Ross Miller at Speedwell Garage in Parkton, MD and see if he could fit it in. He has done several very well received rebuilds for members of the forum and is very thorough in checking everything out -- including a check of the vacuum section which some rebuilders seem to more or less ignore. Another good option would be to get an already rebuilt exchange unit from Kanter. Max probably has them too although I don't know if they do their own rebuilds. I would not waste time with any of the multi make mass market rebuild places that advertise their services. Those are the places most seem to complain about. Posted on: 2019/5/5 10:06 | |||

Bill Heptig | Treadle vac rebuilds? | #58728 | ||

Just can't stay away | Seems my brakes are failing. I tried driving my car and the farther one travels through brakes are on . When I stopped the fronts were smoking so it clearly has a serious problem. The pedal normally seems hard but gets harder as the car travel. There has been many posts about brakes and I'm thinking the master is bad. If it needs a rebuild who are the go to vendors? I've read that some of the places that people have used have not produced reliable results Posted on: 2019/5/5 9:37 | |||

Home away from home | And there we have it! A reply from Mike Chirco at Tucson Packard reminding us that they DO rebuild the Packard power antenna. Now I can stop worrying and start using my power antenna without the angst and anxiety of breaking it or having a failure and no viable source of a fix/repair/replace it. Today's a good day. Quite a regular | Thanks for the info, Riki. I'm miles away from being ready to do the engine on my car, but I've made a note of it for when the time comes. Looks like the Carillos might be the best way to go... Posted on: 2019/5/5 7:38 | |||
