How do you answer the question about weather? ›

Answers such as “It's a sunny day” or “it's warm here today” or “Its cold outside” or “it's cold today” , “the weather is wet”, “it's raining” “”snowing” etc, or even “I haven't been outside so I don't know,” are all perfectly good answers. If you're in the same room, say I was just going to ask you the same thing .

We've come a long way since then, especially in the last 50 years. “More and improved observations such as satellite and radar, research and more sophisticated computer forecast models have led to better forecasts,” weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman says.

Let's look at an example of what the probability does mean. If a forecast for a given county says that there is a 40% chance of rain this afternoon, then there is a 40% chance of rain at any point in the county from noon to 6 p.m. local time.

Weather is the state of the atmosphere, including temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, and cloud cover.

The Short Answer: A seven-day forecast can accurately predict the weather about 80 percent of the time and a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time. However, a 10-day—or longer—forecast is only right about half the time.

How reliable are weather forecasts five days out? Usually, a five-day forecast has a success rate of just under 90%. They are similarly accurate to three-day forecasts. You can use five-day forecasts to prepare for predictable severe weather, such as hurricanes and snowstorms.

The answer? An “80% chance of rain” means an 80% chance that rain will fall somewhere within the forecasted area. Rain refers to 0.01 inch or more of water falling from the sky.

It becomes a chance for precipitation when the value is 30%, 40% or 50%, which represents scattered showers. When a value is listed as 60% or 70%, the precipitation is categorized as likely with numerous areas of precipitation being forecasted.

What does 30 chance of rain mean? ›

Some people have interpreted it to mean that it will rain 30% of the time, others that it will affect 30% of the area. If we think back to how the number is generated, using an ensemble, we see it isn't really either of those, but more like 30% of forecast simulations suggest it will rain.

Isobars are the plain lines curving across the map. They connect points with the same mean sea level air pressure (weight per square area of air above). Some isobars have numbers on them showing this value in hectopascals (hPa). Isobars indicate the flow of air around weather systems.
