The Federal Reserve has made no secret of its plan to keep interest rates higher as it seeks to tame inflation coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it's now looking like rates could stay higher for much longer than anticipated.

Legislative leaders expected that the House would adopt the plan which the Senate OK'd Sunday night. It’s $400 million more than Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker proposed in February and raises taxes and makes other tax code changes to generate $1.2 billion to fund it. Even though the Legislature has gone beyond its self-imposed adjournment deadline of May 24, lawmakers don’t expect conclusion until early Wednesday because of constitutional requirements on the number of days that legislation must be read publicly. Republicans complained that Democrats who control the Legislature are spending beyond the state's means. Deputy House Republican Leader Norine Hammond of Macomb said she found at least $1 billion in spending that would be pushed off to the following fiscal year.

North Korea says leader Kim Jong Un urged his military scientists to overcome a failed satellite launch and continue developing his nation's space-based reconnaissance capabilities. State media reported Kim described such capabilities as crucial for countering U.S. and South Korean military activities. The report also said Kim in his speech Tuesday warned of unspecified “stern” action against South Korea because it performed aerial exercises involving 20 fighter jets near the inter-Korean border hours before the North Korean launch on Monday. North Korea launched its first military spy satellite in November and planned to put three more in orbit this year.

Donald Trump on Tuesday endorsed the primary opponent of Rep. Bob Good, one of the most conservative Republicans in Congress and the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus.

Authorities say a natural gas explosion has caused extensive damage to a building in an Ohio city, injuring seven people. WKBN-TV reports that Tuesday’s blast in Youngstown also damaged a building and blew off the facade. Firefighters helped some people get out of the building, which houses a bank on the ground floor and also has some apartments. A social media post by the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency said there was a natural gas explosion and the situation is “fluid but under control.” The agency asked people to avoid the area.

Leader Kim Jong Un said deploying spy satellites is an essential choice to protect North Korea’s sovereignty after one of its rockets failed in flight, and threatened South Korea over its show of force linked to the launch.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green has signed legislation meant to jumpstart the construction of more dwellings to address an acute housing shortage that is pushing residents to move to states where the cost of living is less. The legislation signed Tuesday include measures that would require counties to allow at least two additional units on residential lots and allow business district buildings to be reconfigured for people to live in. Another would allow state bonds to fund housing infrastructure. The governor said Tuesday Hawaii has a shortage of teachers, nurses, firefighters and other workers because they can’t afford housing. He says the bills would restore some balance.

The two-time national champion at Georgia is participating in the Rams’ organized team activities. Bennett was a fourth-round pick by the Rams after winning his second title with the Bulldogs. He participated in Los Angeles’ team activities and played extensively in the preseason while competing to be Matthew Stafford’s backup. But Bennett left the Rams before the regular season began, and he didn’t return to the team in 2023.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore left a meeting with White House officials Tuesday saying plans were intact to restore the federal channel by June 10 following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and that he expected the first large container ships to return around the same time.
