"Envigo also pleaded guilty to knowingly polluting the environment near the now-shuttered complex."The pollution created from large animal breeding complexes is a topic of concern that I brought up at an ICCVAM meeting at least 15 years ago, and it was verbally "hushed" by one of the NICEATM staff. I have not seen it mentioned since that time, but this verifies it is a real problem - the animal waste plus the chemicals they are dosed with enters the water, air, and soil.

You may skip my commentary below, but please READ the attached STAT ARTICLE. H5N1 has already spread to many mammalian species, including cats. In addition to the potential human pandemic risk, a real and current risk is how are we going to protect our pets? One current problem: “Widespread reluctance on the part of farmers to allow scientists onto their premises to study spread of the virus among infected cows… “Policymakers and farmers need to be educated on the science and the known risks to humans when animal influenza viruses are transmitted to humans. Each transmission to a human runs the risk of the virus mutating to a human pandemic form. This is the time to be offering H5N1 vaccines to all persons in direct contact with potentially infected animals, like was just announced by Finland. Should this be optional anywhere considering the global risk? Where is the ineffective WHO?As of May 16, here is some of the minimal information provided by WHO: “The H5N1 virus remains as an animal virus that primarily infects animals. So far, close to 900 human infections have been reported since 2003, of which more than half were fatal. The H5N1 virus is constantly evolving and could potentially become easily transmissible from person to person. If this occurs, it could be the start of a new influenza pandemic, as was the case with the 1918 and 2009 H1N1 pandemics“ (https://lnkd.in/eR-j_xXS). WHO officials have also commented on the concerns with transmission to cattle and wildlife in several UN news stories, but this information is not reaching the public or the cattle farmers (https://lnkd.in/ez64GAPz).Perhaps the only way to get farmers to realize the urgency of this situation is for consumers to adopt a boycott of ALL cow products. The main barrier is that consumers, like the farmers, often lack the information needed to make this kind of decision. Any other strategic approaches that might be effective?

A broken system for deciding what’s safe: ‘“Currently, food makers are not required to submit to the FDA any data demonstrating their safety of additives under the secret “generally recognized as safe,” or GRAS, loophole, which allows companies to self-certify that chemical additives and ingredients used in food are safe.”
