Today's Connections Category Hints
October 10 #486
If you are looking for hints on today’s puzzle, you have come to the right place. Today’s puzzle is not overly challenging, at least comparatively, but that can also lure you into a false sense of security. There are also two categories that will be hard to solve without the right cultural knowledge, which can be the case quite frequently but is definitely the case today.
- One category is about human anatomy.
- One category is about words that a certain clique of people would say.
- One category is about four words that are all the same type of thing.
- One category is all homophones for certain sounds made famous in a song.

If you still need more hints, you can keep scrolling. Sometimes, even knowing the category is not quite enough, depending on your familiarity with it, but other times, it is just enough to push you over the edge. With any luck, you are familiar with three categories, so that you can leave the fourth for last.

BODY PARTS | |||
---|---|---|---|
ARM | EYE | HIP | LEG |
This category is the easiest and most obvious one today. There are no other real body parts throughout the rest of the puzzle, and seeing ARM and LEG is likely enough to clue you in. HIP and EYE are not limbs; luckily, this category is not looking for just limbs but for any body parts in the puzzle. This one is an excellent start to the rest of the puzzle, which is not quite as easy, but it’s always nice to begin well.

COOL, IN '80S SLANG | |||
---|---|---|---|
BAD | FLY | ILL | RAD |
This one is not as obvious, depending on your familiarity with older slang. BAD certainly does not seem like it should mean “cool,” but there are often many words like that for every generation, as they have odd terms for that kind of meaning. ILL is in a similar position, but RAD and FLY are probably the most popular words that mean “cool” in slang. People may be confused about which words to pick, but no other words in the puzzle really belong here. BIG might, but I am not aware it is a word from the 80s specifically.

MOVIES | |||

BIG | ELF | HER | SAW |
This one does not automatically scream “movies” to me, but ELF is probably the biggest clue. There are no other words that go with the idea of elves or Christmas or Fantasy in this group, so it might lead you to think about the movie. HER and SAW are recognizable movie titles once you think about the movies, but BIG might be a little harder. I’m not sure if any of the other words are one-word movie titles, but none of them jump out as such. This is one where knowing the category is hopefully all you need.

WORDS IN "DO-RE-MI" | |||
---|---|---|---|
DOE | FAR | SEW | TEA |
The words of this song are fairly famous, and Sound of Music is one of my favorite musicals. While these words are not spelled the same way as the musical terms, they are all homophones of them. DOE and TEA feel like they might catch the eye the fastest, but you would likely have to recognize what this category is to guess it before the very end of the puzzle. You are much more likely to guess all the others and want to make the best guess each time you click “submit.”
